On today’s edition of Nottingham businesses we admire, we take a look at Waxu, an intimate waxing business owned by Notts entrepreneur and mother-of-three ,Gemma Cafferkey.
12 years ago she launched Beautification, a salon in Clarendon Street, Nottingham. After spending many years working in the beauty industry, in 2015 she spotted gap in the market for a waxing technique that works wells and is quicker than other alternatives.
That year, Gemma decided to launch her company Waxu, which is an exclusive range of products that are only available to trained beauticians in salons. By doing this, Waxu has a guaranteed standard of professional service.
The brand has indeed proved successful. In it’s first year of launch, it recorded an £80,000 turnover and is predicted to have sales in excess of £750,000 within three years.
Gemma herself has also proved she is a successful and hardworking business woman, after picking up Entrepreneur of the Year at the Nottingham Post Women in Business awards last November.
Most recently, Gemma featured on the hit TV show Dragons Den, after being approached directly by the production team, who were looking for self-funded business owners that developed their own products. She agreed to apply in the hope that the platform could help to share her product with other women and salons worldwide.
After six months of auditions, Gemma secured a place on the show, and put herself in front of the dragons to convince them to invest £50,000 for 10 per cent stake in her intimate waxing products.
But despite waxing Dragon Touker Suleyman’s leg, and impressing all of the Dragons with her great and innovative concept, none of them were prepared to invest.
Despite not winning an investment, Gemma’s business will surely do well on it’s own. The brand is already used in around 100 salons in the UK, and this number continues to grow.
Keep at it Gemma, you’ve made Nottingham proud!
